The word "Kyrgyz" has been derived from the Turkic word for "forty", in reference to the forty clans of Manas, a legendary hero who united forty regional clans against the Uyghurs. Literally, Kyrgyz means We are forty. Kyrgyzstan’s official name is "Kyrgyz Republic" whenever it is used in some international arenas and foreign relations. However, the spelling Kyrgyzstan is commonly used in the English speaking world, while its former name Kirghizia is rarely used. Kyrgyzstan is also known as “The Switzerland of Asia” because of its natural beauty. Traditional Kyrgyz food revolves around mutton, chicken as well as various dairy products. The preparation techniques and major ingredients have been strongly influenced by the nation’s historically nomadic way of life. Thus, many cooking techniques are conducive to the long-term preservation of food. Beshbarmak is the Kyrgyz national dish.
The history of Kyrgyzstan spans over 2,000 years, encompassing a variety of cultures and empires. The geographically isolated highly mountainous terrain has helped preserve its ancient culture. As part of the Silk Road and other commercial and cultural routes Kyrgyzstan has been at the crossroads of several great civilizations. Kyrgyzstan has been inhabited by a succession of independent tribes and clans for a long time. This country has periodically fallen under foreign domination and attained sovereignty as a nation-state only after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. Although it continues to endure ethnic conflicts, revolts, economic troubles, transitional governments and political conflicts the sovereign state has officially been a unitary parliamentary republic since Independence .
Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Collective Security Treaty Organizationthe Turkic Council, the Turksoy community, the Eurasian Economic Union, and the United Nations.
The majority of the country's 6 million people are the ethnic Kyrgyz followed by significant minorities of Uzbeks and Russians. Kyrgyz is closely related to other Turkic languages, although Russian remains widely spoken and is an official language, a legacy of a century of Russification. Kyrgyz is a language belonging to the northwestern group of the Turkic languages and is spoken by most Kyrgyz and a sizeable minority speak Uzbek, which is a Turkic language of the southeastern branch. The official language status has been accorded to both Kyrgyz and Russian. The majority of the population are non-denominational Muslims . Kyrgyz culture bears elements of Persian, Mongolian, and Russian influence in addition to its Turkic origins.
Climate of Kyrgyzstan
The country's climate is influenced chiefly by the mountains and it varies regionally. The absence of any body of water and its position near the middle of the Eurasian landmass is large enough to influence weather patterns and these factors create a distinctly continental climate that has significant local variations.
The mountains tend to collect clouds and block sunlight which reduces some narrow valleys at certain times of year to no more than three or four hours of sunlight per day, the country is generally sunny and in some areas it receives as much as 2,900 hours of sunlight per year. These conditions also affect temperatures, which vary significantly from place to place.
In January the warmest average temperature will be −4 °C or 25 °F around the southern city of Osh, and around Ysyk-Kol. Ysyk-Kol which means “hot lake” in Kyrgyz has a volume of 1,738 cubic kilometers (417 cu mi), does not freeze in winter. The coldest temperatures are in mountain valleys. And the readings can fall to −30 °C (−22 °F) or lower; the record is −53.6 °C (−64.5 °F). The average temperature for July similarly varies from 27 °C (80.6 °F) in the Fergana Valley and its record high is 44 °C (111 °F), to a low of −10 °C (14 °F) on the highest mountain peaks. Precipitation varies from 2,000 millimeters (78.7 in) per year in the mountains above the Fergana Valley to less than 100 millimeters (3.9 in) per year on the west bank of Ysyk-Kol.
